I was wondering about the ice shelves of antartica if they were effected at all? Probably. The great 19th century seismologist Comte Montessus de Ballore reported the anomalous appearance of big icebergs in the South Pacific several weeks after a major tsunami-generating earthquake in Chile. The tsunami of April 1, 1946 floated grounded icebergs in the Antarctic Peninsula's Lemaire Channel.

But if the plates were locked and not moving in respect to each other, why the islands were sinking ? That should happen only when the oceanic plate plunges underneath the continental plate. What have I got wrong ?

What have I got wrong ? The plates were both being pulled down together until the earthquake. The islands were on the upper plate - the newspaper article got this point wrong.  The earthquake released the upper plate so the islands rose with the earthquake. _george
